Paul Marchioni (born January 1, 1955 in Corte ) is a former French football player .

Career

Marchioni grew up in Corsica and played for several clubs there before he was accepted into the youth department of the SEC Bastia . After moving to mainland France, where he went through the INF Vichy training center, he returned to Bastia and was included in the first division team in 1974 under coach Pierre Cahzuac . Although he played a few games in the top French league, but Jean-Louis Cazes and André Burkhard existing competition initially prevented further. In the course of the 1976/77 season, however, he was able to establish himself increasingly and thus had a share in third place in the table; when Burkhard was injured in the following season, Marchioni became a regular player. He was part of a team that made it into the 1978 UEFA Cup final and was able to play in one of the two finals, even if his team missed the title. In the following years Marchioni maintained his position within the team and reached the cup final with the club in 1981 ; thanks to a 2-1 win against AS Saint-Étienne , the player, who was the captain in the final, won the only title of his career.

Following the cup success, he moved to league rivals OGC Nice in 1981 . At Nice, however, he could not establish himself in the starting eleven and also had to accept relegation in 1982; when another competitor, Robert Sab , was committed, the role of the Corsican in the team continued to decline. After the missed rise in 1983 Marchioni returned to his former club Bastia in the first division. First he received a regular place in the relegation battle, which he lost due to a large number of teammates in his position in the following years. When the club had to go into the second division in 1986, the player briefly regained a regular place. In view of a loss of the same role and a multiple failure in the fight for promotion Marchioni decided in 1989 at the age of 34 after 247 first and 73 second division games with two goals each to end his career. He then worked as a talent scout for AS Monaco until he took over this position at Girondins Bordeaux in 2011 .
