Robert Sab (born November 7, 1954 in Troyes ) is a former French football player and coach .
Player career
The midfielder began playing football in his childhood and was accepted into the youth division of the professional club when he was 15 when he was discovered by talent scouts from RC Lens . Despite fierce competition, he made the leap into the first team in 1975 at the age of 20 under coach Arnold Sowinski ; in addition to occasional appearances in the top French division, he made his debut in the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the following years, the young player took a regular place, even if he had to accept relegation to the second division in 1978; he was involved in the direct resurgence with nine goals. Although he was still one of the service providers after the rise, his contract was not extended in 1980.
He found a new employer in league competitor AJ Auxerre , whom he should support in the relegation battle. Despite a place in the starting eleven, there were regular conflicts with Auxerre's long-time coach Guy Roux , whereupon Sab turned his back on the club in 1982. In the same year he signed with the second division OGC Nice , with whom he narrowly failed to rise in the course of the 1982/83 season.
Thanks to appropriate services, he reached in 1983, however, the return to the top division, as he accepted an offer from AS Saint-Étienne . However, he had only the role of a supplementary player at Saint-Étienne and in this way experienced relegation at the end of his first year there. Nevertheless, he did not make the leap into the starting eleven in the 1984/85 season, even if he was allowed to play more often, and also failed to rise again. Although he had played such a minor role in the second division, it was with the Le Havre AC 1985 a first division that became his new employer; in addition, Sab became a regular player in Le Havre. Twice he held the class with the team before he decided to end his professional career in 1987 at the age of 32 after 234 first division games with 18 goals and 70 second division games with 17 goals.
Coaching career
Sab continued his playing career from 1987 to 1989 at an amateur club from Mandelieu-la-Napoule and then took on responsibility as the club's coach; he held this office until 1991. From 1991 to 1992 he occupied the same position at a club from Beaulieu-sur-Mer , but gave it up when he was hired at AS Cannes as the person in charge of the youth department. In 1996 he returned to RC Lens, where he initially worked as a reserve team coach and took over responsibility for the youth team in 1999. In 2001 he was hired as assistant coach of the Qatari national team ; nothing is known about further activities.
