Stadtbad Witten

The Stadtbad Witten was a municipal indoor swimming pool on Richtstrasse in Witten . It was one of the largest urban building projects in Witten in the post-war period . It operated until 2003.

history

The first indoor swimming pool in Witten was built in 1911. During the second major attack on Witten on March 19, 1945, the indoor swimming pool in Witten was badly damaged in the early morning hours. The swimming pool was used until 1949.

The new building began at the instigation of some citizens of Witten in October 1955, the opening took place on July 26, 1958. The income from lotteries and donations amounting to DM 318,000 contributed part of the construction costs. The jumping facility was three, five or seven and a half high. Clubs trained in the bathroom. Swimming courses were organized for the population. The health bath with sauna was only opened in October 1958. There were baths and showers to rent because not all apartments had bathrooms in the post-war period.

In 1989 the pool was transferred to the Witten municipal utilities , which were able to claim the cost deficit for tax purposes. In 1999 it was planned to renovate the bath for 12 million DM. A feasibility study showed the projected costs for a modernization in the amount of DM 15 million. As a result, the municipal utilities decided to close the pool on January 31, 2003. In April 2002, the closure was discussed controversially with citizens at an event organized by the Habitat Forum. In June 2002, the swimming clubs held a protest, but City Planning Officer Oedinger and SPD parliamentary group leader Richter stuck to their position. A citizens' initiative calculated the cost of renovating the bathroom and sauna to be 4 to 5 million euros. The financing proposal included public grants, the leasing of empty rooms, citizen shares and cost optimization for the municipal utilities.

The citizens 'initiative presented in December 2002, about 9,200 signatures one began in November citizens' initiative to Mayor Klaus Lohmann (SPD). This was followed by the closure in 2003 and the demolition in 2005 and the construction of a retirement home at the same location.

The Annen indoor pool, the Herbede indoor pool and the Heveney leisure pool are also available in the Witten area .
