Paul Rabe (chemist)

Paul Rabe (born August 24, 1869 in Hoym , † August 28, 1952 in Hamburg ) was a German chemist and professor at the University of Hamburg .

In 1895 he received his doctorate under Ludwig Knorr at the University of Jena , and in 1900 he completed his habilitation there . From 1901 to 1911 he was teaching assistant and from 1904 associate professor in Jena, 1912–1914 associate professor for experimental chemistry at the University of Prague , 1914–1935 professor a. Director of the State Chemical Laboratory in Hamburg, 1914-1919 professor at the Hamburg Colonial Institute and 1919-1935 full professor of chemistry at the University of Hamburg. 1919–1920 he was the (founding) dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Hamburg, and in 1935 he was released prematurely after a conflict with Nazi students. In 1949 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg.

In 1908 Rabe clarified the molecular structure of quinine .

In November 1933 he signed the professors' declaration of Adolf Hitler at German universities and colleges .
