Paul Wartel

Paul Wartel (born April 26, 1903 in Puteaux , † April 27, 1976 in Antibes ) was a French football player and coach.

Career as a player

Wartel played as a defender or outside runner , from 1926 to 1929 for Red Star Olympique , with whom he won the Coupe de France in 1928 . From 1929 to 1933 he wore the FC Sochaux dress . With this team he was involved in winning the Coupe Sochaux , a forerunner of the professional Division 1 , in 1931 . His active time was ended due to an injury.

Career as a coach

Wartel's first coaching position was with the US Saint-Servan-Saint-Malo in the 1933/34 season. He then worked at FC Sochaux with youth teams and was also a co-coach until 1939 and head coach from 1939 to 1943. In the 1943/44 season, Wartel trained the Équipe Fédérale Nancy-Lorraine , in which there were a number of players from Sochaux. In the final of the national cup competition , Wartel was able to achieve a 4-0 victory over the Équipe Fédérale Reims-Champagne with this "regional selection" . In the 1945/46 season followed a year at Olympique Marseille , from where he then returned to Sochaux (until 1952). The greatest success with this club was winning the second division championship in 1947. From 1953 to 1956 Wartel worked as a coach for the RCFC Besançon , before he again looked after the team of the Lionceaux from Sochaux-Montbéliard from 1957 to 1960 - this time as an assistant and at short notice also again as head coach; while he reached with his team in 1959 for the last time a national cup final , in which, however, Le Havre AC retained the upper hand.
