Paul de Neergaard

Pierre Paul Ferdinand Mourier de Neergaard (born February 19, 1907 in Nyborg , † November 13, 1987 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish botanist , agricultural scientist and Esperantist .

Paul Neergaard is considered the father of seminal pathology. Together with Mary Noble , he coined the term in the 1940s. Neergaard worked as director of the Danish Government Institute for Seed Pathology for Developing Countries in Copenhagen. From 1956 to 1974 he was chairman of the phytopathology committee of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). During his tenure as a board member of ISTA, he was committed to standardization methods for describing the seed-borne mushrooms.

Neergaard authored a two-volume standard work entitled "Seed Pathology" (1977), which referred to a variety of seminal pathology topics, the economic importance of which included seed diseases and achieved worldwide importance.

Neergaard was a professor at the universities in Beirut ( Lebanon ) and Mysore and a member of several national academies and international societies.

Paul Neergard was also an active promoter of the international language Esperanto . He was a member of the Akademio de Esperanto and published several books in this language on science and linguistics .
