Mary Noble

Mary Jessie MacDonald Noble (born February 23, 1911 in Edinburgh ; † July 20, 2002 in Lasswade ) was a British seed pathologist in the Agriculture Administration of Scotland , she is considered the initiator of the manual for seed borne plant diseases.

Live and act

Mary Noble attended Mary Erskine School and studied at Edinburgh University from 1920 to 1935, where she received an honorary degree in botany . She wrote a dissertation on the mycological aspects of seminal pathology, doing her doctorate in 1935 and won the Gunning Victoria Jubilee Prize.

Subsequent to the university Noble was employed in the plant pathology service of the Agriculture Committee (now Scottish Agricultural Science Agency, SASA), which is based in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh . In Noble's career in plant pathology, seeds were one of the main areas of work.

In 1958, Noble was appointed a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of her academic commitment . She was also a member of the British Mycological Society and the Association of Applied Biologists. She was also a member of the International Seed Testing Association and together with Paul de Neergaard and Jo de Tempe published the Summary of Seed- borne Diseases (4th edition, ISTA, 1990).

In 1971, Noble retired from the Agricultural Science Society of Scotland in Seed Pathology and Mycology.

Noble died in Lasswade on July 20, 2002.
