history
In the 13th century, a church was built in Lasswade with today's Lasswade Old Parish Church . After the building had become dilapidated over the centuries, a new building was built in 1793. The Scottish poet William Drummond of Hawthornden, who died in 1649, is buried in the cemetery. Between 1798 and 1804 the eminent Scottish poet Walter Scott lived in the villa Lasswade Cottage .
From 1786 Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville , had a mansion built with Melville Castle on a spacious property northwest of Lasswade. The Scottish architect James Playfair provided the designs for the neo-Gothic building.
Lasswade developed as a mill location. Grain and paper mills as well as carpet factories settled there. In the 19th century Lasswade was a popular destination for wealthy Edinburgh citizens.
