Paula Doenges , also Paula Dönges , ( March 17, 1874 in Leipzig - June 15, 1931 in Langebrück near Dresden ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Doenges, the daughter of a school principal, was "discovered" by him at the age of five when he heard her sing. He also didn't mind that she decided to become a singer when she was a schoolgirl. After taking professional lessons from Friedrich Rebling and August Prost , director of the Stadttheater, she immediately made her debut in Leipzig, where she began her engagement in 1891 as "Agathe". There she stayed until 1908, although she u. a. Bernhard Pollini wanted to sign for the Hamburg City Theater.

In Leipzig she created "Thirza" on November 11, 1906 in the world premiere of the opera Strandrecht ( The Wreckers ) by Ethel Smyth .

In 1906 she made a guest appearance at the Opera in Frankfurt am Main and was engaged there as a dramatic soprano from 1908. She stayed there until 1913 and then worked as a guest.

Her strength lay particularly in Wagner's dramatic roles. So she sang u. a. the "Brünnhilde" in the Ring of the Nibelung , the "Isolde" in Tristan , but also the "Leonore" in Fidelio , the "Countess" in Figaro's wedding , the "Rezia" in Oberon von Weber, the "Santuzza" in Cavalleria rusticana and the "Katharina" in The Taming of the Shrew . She also carried the title of a princely Russian chamber singer.

Her voice is preserved on a single Odeon record (Berlin, 1910).
