Paula England

Paula England (* 1949 in Rapid City ) is an American sociologist who served as the 106th President of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in 2015 . She is a Silver Professor of Arts and Science at New York University . Her main focus is on gender studies .

Although born in South Dakota , Paula England grew up in Minneapolis , Minnesota , where she attended grammar school and high school . She received her bachelor's degree in sociology and psychology in 1971 from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington . The master's degree in social sciences followed in 1972 at the University of Chicago , where England became a Ph.D. in 1975. PhD in sociology . Immediately thereafter, she was Assistant Professor for five years, then Associate Professor from 1980 to 1988 and finally Full Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1988/89 . This was followed by professorships at the University of Arizona (1990 to 1999), the University of Pennsylvania (1999 to 2001), Northwestern University (2002 to 2004), Stanford University (2004 to 2011) and New York University (since 2011) .
