Paula R. Backscheider

Paula R. Backscheider (born March 31, 1943 in Brownsville , Tennessee ) is an American literary scholar and university professor . She published books on literature and culture in the 18th century.

life and work

Backscheider studied at Purdue University and received his bachelor's degree with honors in 1964 . She then studied at Southern Connecticut State College and received her Masters degree in 1967 . She received her PhD from Purdue University in 1972. From 1973 to 1975 she was an assistant professor at Rollins College in Florida , then until 1978 at the University of Rochester . Here she was associate professor until 1987 and since 1992 she has taught at Auburn University in Alabama .

Her research area is the English literature of the 18th century, in particular that of the writer Daniel Defoe . BAckschneider delved into Defoe's life, including his journalistic career, and did background research and analysis on Defoe's greatest works, including the poems and the books Robinson Crusoe and A Journal of the Plague Year . She was Vice President in 1991 and President of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies in 1992.

Backscheider has been married to the systems analyst Nickolas Andrew Backscheider since 1968 , with whom she has two children.
