Paulin Obame Nguema (born December 28, 1934 ) was Prime Minister of the Republic of Gabon from 1994 to 1999 .

Political career

Paulin Obame Nguema is a medical professional and trained in Bordeaux . He returned to Gabon in the late 1960s. From 1975 to 1990 he was a member of various government departments. Until 1992 he was Secretary General of the Government and then Special Advisor to the President.

As part of an agreement between the former single party Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) of the 1967 ruling President Omar Bongo and the opposition, which in on 7 October 1994. Paris was signed, the previously incumbent government of Gabon resigned. On November 2, 1994 Obame Nguema became Prime Minister of a government in which various opposition parties were involved. He himself belongs to the PDG and is considered a close confidante of the President. In March 1995, several tens of thousands of immigrants were expelled from neighboring countries during Operation sans-papiers . The president rejected his resignation in June 1996 and January 1997. The cabinet, which was reorganized after parliamentary elections in January 1997, now consisted almost entirely of ministers from the BDG. During his reign the PDG was able to maintain its dominant position in the parliamentary elections on December 15 and 29, 1996 with 85 out of 120 seats. The president was re-elected on December 12, 1998 with 66.88%.

His term ended on January 23, 1999 when Jean-François Ntoutoume Emane succeeded him as head of government. He was a member of the new government as minister of social affairs and is a member of parliament. In addition, since April 22, 1982 he has been a member of the board of directors of Elf Gabon , a company based in Port-Gentil and a subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine and later Total .
