Léon Mébiame

Léon Mébiame (born September 1, 1934 in Libreville ; † December 18, 2015 ) was a Gabonese politician and Prime Minister of the Republic of Gabon from 1975 to 1990 .

Life

Early years

Léon Mébiame was born in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, France at the time . He became a police officer and worked from 1957 to 1959 in Chad, also in France . After his return and Gabon's independence on August 17, 1960, he made a career in the security apparatus. He attended the École nationale supérieure de police in France and since 1962 belonged to the security police Sûreté nationale of Gabon. In October 1963 he took over the management of the Sûreté .

Political career

From the beginning of 1967 he was a member of the government in various functions, initially under President Léon M'ba . Under President Omar Bongo , who had been in power since November 1967 , at that time still Albert-Bernard Bongo , he was Vice-President of the Government and since January 1968 Minister of Justice. From February 1969 to 1974 he was also mayor of Libreville. As the president, he belonged to the then Unity Party of Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG).

He became Prime Minister on April 16, 1975 when the office was reinstated. In 1990 he was recalled as part of the transition to a multi-party system and a new government was formed on April 27, 1990. In the months before, the government had faced increasing strikes and protests. After leaving office, he supported the opposition in the 1990s, and in 1998 he supported the unsuccessful presidential candidacy of Pierre Mamboundou . In 2004 he publicly spoke out in favor of bongo again.
