Paulo Machava

Paulo Machava (* 1954 ; † August 28, 2015 in Maputo , Mozambique ) was a Mozambican journalist and businessman.

Life

Machava began his journalistic career with the state radio station Rádio Moçambique in the 1980s. He moderated the morning show Onda Matinal ("Morning Wave") from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the main topic of which was the crime of Maputo. With the democratization of Mozambique and the introduction of the multi-party system, he switched to the weekly newspaper Savana, which was critical of the government . There he later rose to editor-in-chief. In this position he was instrumental in reporting on the scandal of the privatized state bank Banco Comercial de Moçambique . As a result, Machava and his colleague Salomão Moyana received several death threats. Carlos Cardoso, who was also investigating the scandal, was shot dead on November 22, 2000.

Machava later switched to the weekly newspaper Zambeze , but only stayed with it for a short time. Shortly thereafter, he switched to Ericino de Salema's publishing house, which still publishes the (electronic) newspapers Embondeiro and Diário de Notícias . In recent years he has also advised the Maputo gated community "Kaya Kwanga" on event management and was considered a friend of the owner of the residential complex.

On August 28, 2015, Paulo Machava was shot from a car while jogging in the center of Maputo, on the corner of Avenida Vladimir Lenine / Avenida Augustinho Neto , and died at the scene. The assassination attempt is reminiscent of the deaths of (among others) Carlos Cardoso († 2000) and Gilles Cistac († 2015), who were also shot in the street.

Fernando Mbanze and Salomão Moyana doubted that Machava's journalistic activity could have been the reason for the murder, as he had not published any texts for a long time. The rumors that he took part in the organization of a demonstration for the freedom of the press in the course of the trial of Carlos Nuno Castel-Branco , Fernando Mbanze and Fernando Veloso are also not true.
