Paul (Exarch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paulus († 726/27) was an Eastern Roman Patricius , strategist of Sicily and exarch of Ravenna until 726/727.

Paul was a confidante of Emperor Leon III. , from whom he was sent to Sicily in 718. There he was supposed to put down the revolt of Sergius, who had proclaimed Basil Onomagulus to be anti-emperor. On this occasion he was appointed Patricius and strategist of Sicily. When it was in the first half of the twenties because of the increased tax demands of Leons III. When there was resistance in Italy, which was supported by the Pope, Paul seems to have been appointed exarch of Italy and sent to Ravenna.

On the orders of the emperor, Paul is said to have tried to kill or arrest Pope Gregory II , but this failed and, as the Liber Pontificalis reports, led to a new wave of uprisings in Italy and a further erosion of Byzantine rule. Paul himself was given the anathema by the Pope . He was killed in 726/727 when he tried to subdue Ravenna, apparently in revolt, on the orders of the emperor.
