The Pavelhaus in Laafeld

The Pavelhaus , Slovenian Pavlova hiša , is a museum, a meeting place and a cultural center of the Slovenian ethnic group in the Austrian Styria . The Pavelhaus is run by the Article VII Cultural Association for Styria. It is located in the small village of Laafeld (Slovene Potrna ) near Bad Radkersburg . It is named after Ágoston Pável , a Slovenian poet, ethnologist and linguist.

history

In 1988, a committed group around the philosophy professor Wolfgang Gombocz founded the Article VII Cultural Association at the University of Graz , which wanted to see the rights of the Slovene minority enshrined in the State Treaty of 1955 fully implemented in Styria. In 1995, the association was finally able to acquire a derelict farmhouse in the small village of Laafeld / Potrna in the Radkersburg area. This was renovated with financial support from the republics of Austria and Slovenia and expanded into a contemporary cultural center in the following years. Initially rejected by some in the region, it was also the target of a letter bomb by bomb maker Franz Fuchs . The official opening of the Pavelhaus in May 1998 took place under strict police protection.

In its permanent exhibition, the museum shows insights into the Slovenian past and present of Styria with special consideration of the autochthonous Slovenian ethnic group in the districts of Southeast Styria, Leibnitz and Deutschlandsberg. The currently shown version of the exhibition goes back to a comprehensive revision in 2014.

The revision of the bilingual display board exhibition is based on the exhibition "Gledat, kaj, delajo - look what they're doing" shown in the former casino in Maribor on the occasion of the 2012 Capital of Culture year . A component of all exhibitions are multimedia presentations in which members of the minorities speak as contemporary witnesses about their life and life in the past.

The exhibition Roma in Slovenia also deals with the history and development of the Roma at Cankova in Slovenia, as does the German-speaking exhibition in Slovenia , which shows the history and development of the German-speaking minority in Abstall in Slovenia.

In addition to these permanent exhibitions, current temporary exhibitions are also shown, such as B. The History of the Jews of Lendava (2004) .

Cultural center

The cultural center also holds art exhibitions that change several times a year and show contemporary art from Slovenia, Austria and around the world in a small village away from the major centers. There are also bilingual book presentations, concerts and discussion groups in the Pavelhaus. Since 2001 it has been a partner of the international festival Steirischer Herbst .

Meeting place

Along with the cultural center, the Pavelhaus is the meeting point for the Slovenian and other minorities who seek and want to preserve their cultural identity. Lectures and workshops on these topics should at the same time awaken and promote understanding for the minority. Together with the Article VII Association for the Slovenes in Styria , the Pavelhaus raises the political demand for recognition as a national Slovenian minority.

meaning

In May 2001, Waltraud Klasnic was the first governor to visit the Pavelhaus and had the Pavelhaus sponsored once with 200,000 schillings . Despite the mention of the Styrian Slovenes in Article 7 of the Austrian State Treaty of 1955, the state of Styria still refuses to recognize the Slovenian language group as a national minority. In the neighboring state of Carinthia , a similar conflict led to the so-called local sign dispute .
