Paweł Szymański (born March 28, 1954 in Warsaw ) is a Polish composer.

Life

Szymański studied composition with Włodzimierz Kotoński at the Warsaw Music Academy until 1978 . He continued his training with Tadeusz Baird and 1984–85 with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati in Vienna. In 1976 he took part in the international summer academy for early music in Innsbruck, in 1978, 1980 and 1982 in the Darmstadt summer courses . From 1979 to 1981 he worked with the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio, 1982-84 with the Independent Studio for Electroacoustic Music and in 1983 with the Studio for Electronic Music of the Kraków Music Academy. As a participant in the German Academic Exchange Service , he worked for the electronic studio at the Technical University of Berlin from 1987 to 1989 .

In 1979 Szymański won first prize in the competition for young composers of the Polish Composers' Union with the Gloria for women's choir and instrumental ensemble. In 1984 he received a prize for sacred music from the International Bach Academy Stuttgart for Lux Aeterna . With Partita III for harpsichord and orchestra, he won the Benjamin Britten Composing Competition in Aldeburgh in 1988. In 1993 he received the annual prize from the Polish Composers' Union, and the following year the Grand Prize of the Cultural Foundation. In 1995 he received the main prize in the composition competition of the International Foundation Of Polish Music for In Paradisum .

From 1982 to 1987 Szymański taught at the Faculty of Composition, Music Theory and Conducting at the Warsaw Music Academy. He was a board member and vice-president of the Polish Composers' Association and a member of the program committee of the Warsaw Autumn Festival (1987 and 1989–99). In 1997 he founded the Friends of Warsaw Autumn Foundation with Krzysztof Knittel , Stanisław Krupowicz and Józef Patkowski .
