Józef Patkowski

Józef Patkowski (born November 15, 1929 in Wilno ; † October 26, 2005 in Warsaw ) was a Polish musicologist and music teacher, composer and one of the main promoters of electroacoustic music in Poland and internationally.

Patkowski studied music theory at the Music Academy and musicology and physics at the University of Warsaw . From 1952 to 1954 he was assistant for musical acoustics at the musicological institute of the university. From 1954 he worked for the Polish Radio, first for the radio play editorial team, later also for the documentary film studios in Warsaw.

In 1957 Patkowski founded the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio , which he headed until 1985. Worked here over the years, in addition to Polish composers such as Zbigniew Wiszniewski , Włodzimierz Kotoński , Krzysztof Penderecki , Boguslaw Schaeffer , Andrzej Dobrowolski and Tomasz Sikorski many foreign composers of experimental music, including Franco Evangelisti , Roland Kayn , François-Bernard Mâche , Arne Nordheim , Kåre Kolberg , Christer Grewin , Bengt Emil Johnson , Tamas Ungvary , Arthur Maddox , Philip Werren , Herbert Brün , Lejaren Hiller , Dennis Eberhard , Ben Johnston , Charles Lipp , Paul-Heinz Dittrich , Hans-Karsten Raecke , Benno Ammann , Wilhelm Zobl , Vittorio Gelmetti , Stephen Montague , Nigel Osborne , Józef Rychlik , Roman Berger , Dubravko Detoni and Wataru Uenami . In the 1970s, Patkowski also brought young Polish composers into the studio, including Elżbieta Sikora , Krzysztof Knittel , Andrzej Bieżan , Paweł Szymański , Andrzej Dutkiewicz and Ryszard Szeremeta . In total, more than 200 electroacoustic compositions were created, in which Patkowski himself contributed with several film scores.

From 1975 to 1978 Patkowski was Chairman of the Program Council of the Warsaw Autumn Music Festival , from 1979 to 1985 President of the Polish Composers' Association and from 1985 to 1996 General Secretary of the Polish Music Council. Since 1994 he has been a member of the German Society for Electroacoustic Music , which later honored him with an honorary membership.
