Vittorio Gelmetti

Vittorio Gelmetti (born April 25, 1926 in Milan , † February 5, 1992 in Florence ) was an Italian composer.

The son of a professional officer grew up in Bardolino with his grandparents and trained as a surveying engineer in Rome from 1938. After the fall of the fascist system in Italy, he joined the militia of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana . After its downfall, he decided to do an autodidactic training as a composer, orienting himself on avant-garde composers such as Anton Webern , Béla Bartók , Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky . After attending an orchestral course at the Accademia Chiagena in Siena, he made his debut in 1958 with the Musica per quattro archi .

Around the same time he began writing as a music critic for the newspaper Il Popolo . From 1959 to 1963 he worked at the Discoteca di Stato and the Electroacoustic Laboratory of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, and during this time composed electroacoustic music, including Treni d'onda a modulazione d'intensá (1963). He later turned to the form of musical collage, processing existing musical works and using traditional musical instruments.

His career as a film music composer began in 1963 when Michelangelo Antonioni used his music for his film Il deserto rosso . He wrote other film scores for Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Sotto il segno del Scorpione , Ansano Giannarelli's Sierra Maestra (1969), Il sasso in bocca (1970) and Cento giorni a Palermo (1984) by Giuseppe Ferrara . From 1969 he also composed music for theater performances at the Teatro Stabile d'Aqiuila .

The compositions Nous irons à Tahiti and Intersezioni II e III - in memoriam di E. Varèse - were created in the studio S2FM in Florence in 1965 . In 1969 he created the collage L'opera abbandonata tace e volge la sua cavità verso l'esterno in the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio . As part of the 900 Musica di Trento festival , Guernic , a work commissioned by the Vienna Theater of the Moment, premiered on the 200th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death in the following year.
