Giuseppe Ferrara (2012)

Giuseppe Ferrara (born July 15, 1932 in Castelfiorentino , † June 25, 2016 in Rome ) was an Italian film critic , documentary filmmaker , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Ferrara was enthusiastic about film from an early age, founded a film club and wrote his thesis at the University of Florence in 1957 on the "Nuovo Cinema Italiano". After moving to Rome , he completed the directing course at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in 1959. In the years that followed, he not only produced popular documentaries dealing with political issues and current sociological problems, but also two books about the films Luchino Visconti and Francesco Rosi . From 1970 to 1976 a drama encyclopedia followed in 80 deliveries. He also wrote for numerous film periodicals and was a member of the Association of Film Critics.

In addition to his films for Italian, he also worked for Bulgarian and Cuban television until he began a new chapter in his work in 1970 - Ferrara was now directing feature films. In these, too, he pursued his sociological topics of politics, mafia, terrorism and drugs. Milestones of this kind of cinema emerged with Cento giorni a Palermo , Il caso Moro and Giovanni Falcone .

To finance his films as independently as possible, Ferrara founded the Cine 2000 cooperative in 1969 .

Ferrara has won the Italian Nastro d'Argento film award twice: in 1961 for the best experimental short film and in 1974 for the best short film.
