Paxton concilians is a species of fish from the family of the cardinalfish (Apogonidae), which occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean above the continental shelf of northwestern Western Australia at a depth of 40 to 80 meters. So far the species is only known from six specimens.

features

Paxton concilians grow to be about 7.5 cm long, are slightly slimmer than most other cardinalfish and are the only cardinalfish to have an undivided dorsal fin and a single anal fin spine. In addition, the segmented dorsal soft rays are branched. In all other cardinalfish, the dorsal fin is divided into two by a deep incision, the segmented dorsal fin soft rays are unbranched and there are two fin spines in the anal fin. All caudal fin rays are branched (the upper and lower ones are unbranched in all other cardinalfish).

The number of vertebrae is 24. The head and trunk are scaly, but have numerous papillary neuromasts . The eyes are partially covered by a thick, whitish cornea. The entire edge of the gill cover is covered with skin (uncovered in all other cardinalfish). The tooth plate on the third epibranchial (bone support of the upper branch of the third branchial arch), which is present in all other cardinalfish, is missing. The fifth hypuralia, which is present in all other cardinalfish as a small bone splinter, is also missing.
