Pearl McGonigal

Pearl Kathryne McGonigal , CM , OM (born June 10, 1929 in Melville , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian politician . From 1981 to 1986 she was Vice Governor of the Province of Manitoba .

biography

Before entering politics, McGonigal worked for nine years as a bank clerk and seven years as an advertising clerk. In 1969 she was elected the first woman to the St. James Assiniboia City Council, two years before incorporation into Winnipeg . She then served on Winnipeg City Council for a further ten years, from 1979 to 1981 as Vice Mayor.

During this time, McGonigal wrote numerous columns in local newspapers. Among them was a weekly cooking column called Frankly Feminine , which earned her a reputation as a gourmet cook and popularized her across Manitoba. She was also a board member or director of numerous charitable and cultural organizations, and she was on the boards of several companies.

Governor General Edward Schreyer swore in McGonigal on October 23, 1981 as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. She was the first woman in this representative office and held it until December 11, 1986. She then resumed her previous charitable activities. In 1994 she received the Order of Canada for her services , and six years later the Order of Manitoba .
