Richard Spink Bowles

Richard Spink Bowles , QC (born November 16, 1912 in Winnipeg , † July 9, 1988 ibid) was a Canadian attorney . From 1965 to 1970 he served as lieutenant governor of the province of Manitoba .

biography

Bowles, the son of a dentist, studied law at the University of Manitoba . From 1937 he practiced as a lawyer in Winnipeg and opened his own law firm there three years later. In addition to his professional activity, he was involved in various organizations. In 1952 he became the first president of the Winnipeg Home and School Association, from 1956 to 1957 he was chairman of the municipal commission on parks and leisure facilities. From 1961 he was president of the Manitoba Bar Association, and from 1964 to 1965 also president of the province's legal association.

Governor General Georges Vanier swore in Bowles on September 1, 1965 as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. He held this representative office until September 2, 1970. After James Duncan McGregor , he was only the second incumbent who had not previously held a political office. Both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg awarded him honorary doctorates for his services . Bowles ran unsuccessfully in the 1972 general election for the Liberal Party in the Lisgar constituency.
