Philip S. Lee , CM , OM (born May 5, 1944 in Hong Kong ; chin.李紹麟) is a Canadian chemist . From 2009 to 2015 he was Vice Governor of the Province of Manitoba and as such represents the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II , at the provincial level.

biography

Lee emigrated to Canada in 1962 to graduate from the University of Manitoba with a degree in chemistry. In 1967 he was hired by the city council of the provincial capital Winnipeg as a research chemist and in the following years carried out research in the areas of water supply and water quality. He later rose to the position of chief chemist at the city's industrial wastewater control agency.

In addition to his professional activity, which he carried out until his retirement in 2005, Lee played an important role in the Chinese immigrant community from the 1970s and promoted cultural and economic exchange as a member or chairman of numerous organizations. As a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba , he ran unsuccessfully in the 1977 elections to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly . He was then a member of the Provincial Human Rights Commission until 1981.

Lee received several awards for his services to the integration of Chinese immigrants, including the Order of Canada in 2002 and the Order of Manitoba in 2009 . Governor General Michaëlle Jean swore him in on August 4, 2009 as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. He held this representative office until June 19, 2015.
