Pedro Fernández de Villegas

Pedro Fernández de Villegas (born March 25, 1453 in Burgos , † December 6, 1536 ibid) was a Spanish humanist , translator and Roman Catholic cleric.

Live and act

De Villegas spent most of his life in his hometown of Burgos. From 1485 to 1490 he lived in Rome . His intellectual training and attitudes were profoundly influenced by Italian culture and a large number of literary readings that he attended there. He was under the protection of Juana of Aragon , a daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon .

De Villegas translated various Latin poets and a selection from Plutarch's works. He also made a complete translation of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy into Castilian .

In 1496 he joined the office of the archdeacon of the Cathedral of Burgos on. His brother was Jerónimo de Villegas , prior in Covarrubias .
