Peer Schmidt (historian)

Peer Schmidt (born April 29, 1958 in Plöckendorf ; † December 26, 2009 ) was a German historian .

Peer Schmidt grew up in Nuremberg , studied Romance languages, history and political science and obtained his master's degree from the University of Cologne in 1986 . He received his doctorate in 1989 under Horst Pietschmann at the University of Hamburg with the thesis The privatization of the property of the dead hand in Spain. Secularization under King Charles IV in Andalusia, 1798–1808 . He then became a scientific assistant to Hans-Joachim König at the University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . He completed his habilitation there in 1996 on the subject of the Spanish Universal Monarchy or 'German Liberty'. The Spanish Empire in the Thirty Years War Propaganda. In 1999 he became professor for Latin American and Southwest European history at the University of Erfurt . From 2004 to 2008 he was also director of the Gotha Research Center for cultural and social science studies .
