Peeter Saul (born January 26, 1932 in Tallinn ; † July 2, 2014 there ) was an Estonian conductor , pianist and arranger .

Life and music

Peeter Saul was born in the Estonian capital as the son of the Estonian conductor Linda Saul (1907–1997) and the violin teacher Voldemar Saul. His father played the violin in the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In his youth, Saul stood out as a well-known boxer. He made it to the Estonian championship.

From 1957 to 1961 Saul studied piano at the Tallinn State Conservatory with Bruno Lukk (1909–1991). In 1970 he graduated from there with a degree in conducting. He then formed at the Conservatory in Leningrad continued.

From 1960 to 1964 he conducted the Estonian SSR State Philharmonic Orchestra . From 1964 to 1998 Peeter Saul was (chief) conductor of the stage orchestra (entertainment orchestra) of the Estonian Radio .

He has also conducted symphony orchestras and numerous operettas . He performed in a number of bands himself, including as a jazz pianist.

Saul died in Tallinn in 2014 at the age of 82 after a long illness.

Private life

Peeter Saul was the older brother of the actor and director Jaan Saul (1936–1966). His second wife was the Estonian mezzo-soprano Heli Lääts (1932-2018).

Peeter Saul was the father of two sons: the Estonian mathematician and politician Peeter Lorents (* 1951) from his first marriage and Kaarel Saul from his second marriage.
