geography

The place is located on the north coast of the Kassandra peninsula about 105 km from Thessaloniki . It got its current name from the pine forests in which it is embedded. In 2011 the place had 1,931 inhabitants. In summer the population increases sharply, as many of the buildings are designed as holiday apartments or summer houses. Especially the beaches (Pefkochori Beach, Kera Maria, Glarokavonos and Kanavitsa) attract many tourists.

There are also two kindergartens, a primary school, a grammar school, a doctor's practice, a senior citizens' meeting place (Κέντρο Ανοιχτής Προστασίας Ηλικιωμένων, KAPI), a cultural association "Alkyon" (Μέλκδανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανανω (ωλκνανω) and a social welfare office (Αλκνανανανανα Μομνως ΑΜομνων) and a social welfare office (Αλκνανω δΜομναναήΚοινως ήΜομναναήΚοινως ΜέΜονανως ΑΜομνως ΚΚοινανοήινων.

The main artery is the coastal road that connects the town to the west with Chaniotis and to the east with Paliouri . However, there are also small roads and connecting paths to the south, over the hill from Kassandra to the districts of Lefkes and Panorama to Agia Paraskevi (Αγία Παρασκευή) and Loutra (Λουτρά) in the south. The height of Kassandra rises south of the place up to 240  m above sea level .

Administrative division

The local community is divided into three districts:

  • Pefkochori (Πευκοχώρι, 1.931 inhabitants)
  • Lefkes (Λεύκες, 21 residents)
  • Panorama (Πανόραμα, 10 inhabitants)

history

Pefkochori windmill.

Archaeological finds suggest that ancient Aiges (Αιγές) was located between Pefkochori and the neighboring town of Chaniotis to the west. Around 1590, the large monastery property (Μεγάλο Μετόχι) "Anter" (Άντερ) of the monastery Iviron monastery is in the area , but it was expropriated before the war. To this day only the half-destroyed windmill has survived. Today's place was formerly called Kapsochora and was founded at the end of the 16th century. During the Ottoman period, the place consistently belonged to the 12 places on the peninsula and owned (tax lease) by Gazanfer Aga (Γκαζανφέρ Αγά). Administratively he belonged to the Nahiya Kalamaria (ναχιγιέ της Καλαμαριάς). During the Greek Revolution in 1821, numerous residents of the place took part. Well-known are: Georgios Giannaki (Γεώργιος Γιαννάκη), Antonios Ioannou (Αντώνιος Ιωάννου), Ioannis Kotzas (Ιωάννης Κοτζάς).

The village and rural community of Kapsochora were renamed Pefkochori in 1965. Due to the community reform according to the Kapodistrias program , the then Pefkochori district was part of the Pallini community between 1997 and 2010 (Δήμος Παλλήνης). This in turn became part of the administrative reform in 2010 as a municipality in the new municipality of Kassandra , where Pefkochori has since had the status of a local community.
