Peggy Stern (musician)

Margaret Peggy Stern (* 22. September 1948 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz - pianist and keyboardist .

Peggy Stern studied piano at the Eastman School of Music , graduated in 1968 and then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music until 1970 . In the early 1980s she began her career as a jazz musician, worked in the octet of Julian Priester and with Richie Cole ; During this time she also played in R&B groups and with Latin music ensembles. In the early 1990s, Stern worked with Lee Konitz and guitarist Vic Juris ( Lunasea, 1992). During this time she began to work with her own formations; Her first album Pleiades was created in 1993 with bassist Ben Allison and drummer Jeff Williams . Sue Terry , Thomas Chapin , Harvie Swartz and Bobby Previte worked on their later albums .

Stern taught at the Cornish Institute in Seattle from 1981 to 1989 and at the SUNY Purchase from 1991 .

After Cook / Morton, Stern uses influences from Lennie Tristano with elements of African, Jewish and Latin American music in her piano playing .
