Pekka Eerik Juhani Sarmanto (born February 15, 1945 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish jazz bassist .

Sarmanto studied classical violin at the Sibelius Academy from 1958 to 1964 before switching to the double bass. He then played dance music at first, but was soon invited to appearances in jazz clubs by band leaders such as Eero Koivistoinen and Esa Pethman .

In 1967 he became a member of the house band of the Down Beat Club , where he accompanied musicians such as Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon . He has been a member of the UMO Jazz Orchestra since it was founded in 1975 . With the orchestra he accompanied numerous internationally renowned jazz musicians who made guest appearances in Finland. He also performed with Charles Mingus (in Belgrade), Gil Evans , Dizzy Gillespie , Edward Vesala and Sonny Rollins .

In 1978 he received the Georgie Award from the Finnish Jazz Federation. In 1982 he worked on the album To A Finland Station by Dizzy Gillespie and Arturo Sandoval . In 1996 he founded the Pekka Sarmanto Trio .
