Pelargonium abrotanifolium belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1781 as Geranium abrotanifolium .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species grows as an upright or erect-end creeping subshrub with fleshy roots and slender shoots. It grows up to 100 centimeters high. The gray-green and glandular leaves have a relatively long and persistent petiole. The blade is usually divided 3 to 5 times, with each segment in turn being divided into 3 or more linear lobes.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is branched and each partial inflorescence bears 2 to 5 individual flowers. The flower stalk is short and the flower cup is colored red. The green sepals have white or pink margins. Of the five white, pink or mauve-colored petals , the top two are grouped together, spatulate in shape and have red or purple feather-like markings. The lower three petals are obovate and basally bent back by 60 °. There are seven fertile stamens in three different lengths.

Occurrence

Pelargonium abrotanifolium comes from the South African provinces of the North Cape , Western Cape , Eastern Cape and Free State .

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1781 by Carl von Linné the Younger . Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin placed the species in the genus Pelargonium in 1797 .

The species belongs to the Reniformia Knuth section . It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
