Pelargonium odoratissimum belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). The species wasfirst describedby Linnaeus in 1753 as Geranium odoratissimum . Then it was recombined several times, so that a large number of synonyms exist.

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species grows as a small shrub with succulent roots and is up to 30 centimeters high. The simple, apple-green leaves are arranged in rosettes and have a heart-shaped to circular blade . They have shallowly notched to incised lobes and have a notched to tiny notched edge. The leaves give off a sweet apple and mint scent.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is branched and forms partial inflorescences with 4 to 10 individual flowers each. The exceptionally slender flower stalk is generally shorter than the green flower cup that is thickened at the base . The lanceolate sepals are green with white edges. The upper one is straight, the lower 4 are bent back 180 degrees. The 5 petals are white to light pink in color. The upper 2 are spatulate and are close together. They have a purple feather-like mark and are bent back 90 degrees towards the tip. The lower 3 obovate petals are nailed narrowly and bent back 60 degrees from the base. In the flower there are 7 fertile stamens in 3 different lengths. They are shorter than the sepals.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Distribution and location

The plants are native to the South African provinces of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape .

use

The leaves are approved in Germany as an ingredient in quince jelly and jam.
