description

The African geranium forms a basal rosette of heart-shaped leaves with a velvety texture and a few short trichomes on long petioles . Its flowers have five dark red to almost black petals, two of which are sometimes fused. It can often be found in bloom for most of the year. It prefers to grow in grasslands with rocky bottoms. It can be difficult to distinguish from Pelargonium reniforme , which grows in a similar area but tends to have more kidney-shaped leaves.

Medical application

A 2013 clinical trial review by Cochrane found preliminary evidence of the benefits of Pelargonium sidoides root extract for symptoms of acute bronchitis , common cold, and acute rhinosinusitis ; however, the quality of the evidence was poor to very poor.

A summary of this review showed that all studies "were from the same investigator (the manufacturer) and were conducted in the same region (Ukraine and Russia)".
