Pelham Aldrich CVO (born December 8, 1844 in Mildenhall , England, † November 12, 1930 in Great Bealings , Suffolk , England) was an admiral in the Royal Navy .

Aldrich joined the Royal Navy in 1859 and rose to admiral until 1907, after which he retired in 1908. In 1902 he was awarded the Royal Victorian Order as Commander. He was married to Edith Caroline since 1875.

Pelham Aldrich took part in the British Arctic Expedition under George Nares from 1875 to 1876 with the ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery . He was the first to reach Cape Columbia , the northernmost point of Canada on Ellesmere Island .

Cape Aldrich on Ellesmere Island and Mount Aldrich , which is located in Antarctica on the east side of the Ragotzki glacier, are named after him . Aldrich helped Robert Falcon Scott on expeditions to Antarctica.

In 1878, under the command of Aldrich, the HMS Egeria reached Christmas Island . An expedition group reached the summit of what is now Murray Hill and found phosphate there in almost pure form, as predicted by the Scottish oceanographer John Murray .

Since Pelham Aldrich had visited Christmas Island as a celebrity , the local postal administration dedicated a stamp to him in 1978 .
