Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo
Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (born July 28, 1868 in Volpedo ; † June 14, 1907 there ) was a painter and representative of Italian realism .
Giuseppe Pellizza came from a family of farmers in southern Piedmont who had been able to acquire their small lease property as part of land reforms. Pelizza was a student at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera . He was influenced by Giovanni Segantini . He turned mainly to social issues.
His monumental painting Il quarto Stato (The Fourth Stand ), which he painted in the years 1898–1901 and which is 2.93 × 5.45 meters in size, can be described as the high point of socially committed realistic art at the end of the 19th century. Pellizza worked on this topic for about ten years. Among other things, he made his sketches at rallies and workers' strikes during the great agricultural crisis. For him, it is not about real reality, but about an idealizing reality. The painting is viewed as a monument to the labor movement.
On June 14, 1907, he hanged himself in his studio immediately in front of his painting Il quarto stato .
Bernardo Bertolucci's film 1900 begins with an opening long shot of the picture.
