Class : Lecanoromycetes

Order : Peltigerales
Family : Peltigeraceae
Genre : Peltigera
Type : Peltigera praetextata
Scientific name
Peltigera praetextata
( Flörke ex Sommerf. ) Vain.

Peltigera praetextata also known as scale dog lichen , is a leaf-shaped lichen with blue-green algae ( cyanobacteria ) as algae partner.

description

The strong lobes of the lichen, often over 20 cm in size, are very fine-felted and matt on the surface and slightly frosted on the edge. When dry, it is gray-brown in color. When wet, it turns dark gray to almost black - characteristic of lichens with cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) as partners. Also characteristic is the appearance of so-called woundisidia, scaly outgrowths that form on the edges and on cracks on the surface of the lichen bed. The underside is white with clear brown veins and conspicuous white rhizines with which the lichen adheres to its base. At the narrow, ascending ends of the lobes, up to 6 mm long, red-brown apothecia form .

Location and distribution

The lichen is widespread in shady, damp places on rotten tree stumps and on mossy ground.

This type of lichen is widespread: there are finds from Europe, North America and Australia. It is considered to be very endangered, for example in the Red List of Endangered Lichen in Austria. Likewise in Saxony-Anhalt, where it is carried out in the highest risk level

Curiosa

Underside of the psyllium lichen with rhizines

The dandruff Hundsflechte was formerly known as Herba musci canini or Hepaticae terrestrial officinal as a remedy for rabies . As early as 1777, Lightfoot reported that the dog lichen ingested with warm cow's milk and black pepper cured rabies. Apparently, the rhizins , which resemble dog teeth , led people to believe this. The name Schuppen-Hundsflechte is derived from this.
