Peniocereus castellae is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Manuel T. Castella, a Mexican cactus lover and president of the Mexican cactus society Sociedad Mexicana de Cactología , who discovered the species.
description
Peniocereus castellae has few branches with upright shoots . Larger shoots are bent over. The carrot-like roots are 20 to 50 centimeters and have a diameter of 5 to 15 centimeters. The triangular, green shoots are 60 to 130 centimeters long and 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. There are three wavy, fleshy ribs . The middle one protrudes from the three to five awl, stiff, grayish central spines . The rest are a bit spreading. The thorns are 1 to 2.5 inches long. The two to four short, yellowish radial spines are needle-like.
The salver-shaped white flowers open at night. They are up to 11 centimeters long and 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The humped pericarpel is covered with yellowish wool and some bristles. The fruits are up to 4 centimeters long and 2 centimeters in diameter. They contain a red pulp . A persistent remnant of flowers adheres to them.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Peniocereus castellae is common in the Mexican states of Jalisco , Colima and Michoacán . The first description was in 1974 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
