Peniocereus tepalcatepecanus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Peniocereus tepalcatepecanus has a shrubby growth, often sprawling with initially upright, later arching, rarely branched shoots and reaches heights of 60 to 130 centimeters. The light brown, carrot-like, occasionally forked roots are up to 35 centimeters long and have a diameter of 8 to 12 centimeters. The shoots are twofold (dimorphic). Young shoots are erect, 30 to 40 centimeters long and 9 to 10 millimeters in diameter. They consist of one or more, more or less triangular, dark green, up to 15 centimeters long sections. One to three protruding central spines and six to seven radial spines arise from the areoles . Older shoots are round with a diameter of 16 to 22 millimeters. They have three to four inconspicuous, bluntly rounded ribs . The shoots are initially cloudy green and spotted white. They later become almost completely white. The short thorns are conical. There are three central spines and nine adjacent radial spines.

Nothing is known about the flowers . The elongated fruits are 5.5 to 7.5 inches long. They are initially green and turn dark purple when ripe. They contain a red pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus tepalcatepecanus is common in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Michoacán at altitudes of 500 to 800 m.

The first description was in 1974 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada . The species is not well known.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
