Pennal

Pennal is an outdated term from the student language for a secondary school .

The word comes from the Latin penna , 'pen' (the Austrian word also stands for pen box , case for writing material). Students of Pennals (especially high school students) are Pennäler called. In the 17th century, the term was also used for new students Students used (see also: Pennalismus ) .

The term is hardly used these days. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the school type has been mentioned instead ( elementary school , high school ). Indirectly, the name lived on in colloquial language and in school language until the end of the 1970s as “Penne”, which is now considered out of date.
