José Guízar Morfín (born February 12, 1906 in Guadalajara , Jalisco , † September 27, 1980 in Mexico City ), better known as Pepe Guízar , was a Mexican composer .

Life

Guízar began his musical studies in his hometown of Guadalajara, including at the Instituto de Ciencias de Jalisco , before he went to Mexico City in 1928 at the insistence of his father to study law and social sciences. After three years he gave up studies that were not in accordance with his nature and instead studied music and declamation at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City.

Influenced by Agustín Lara , Guízar began to compose himself and created his first work Guadalajara in 1937 as a homage to his hometown. Guízar composed a total of 119 songs, some of which are named after various Mexican locations. Some of his songs - including his debut Guadalajara , recorded by Elvis Presley - became known beyond the borders of Mexico and helped Mexican folklore to become more popular in other countries.

A few years before his death, the state government of Jalisco Guízar transferred the right of residence to the castle in the amusement park Bosque Los Colomos , which is now named after him and is located in the suburb of Zapopan, west of Guadalajara .

Guízar returned frequently to Mexico City and died on one of those trips at the age of 74.
