Pepe Marchena

Pepe Marchena (* 1903 in Marchena , † 4. December 1976 in Seville ; actually José Tejada Martín ) was a Spanish Flamenco - singer .

In his youth Pepe Marchena worked as a shepherd , later he learned a locksmith and innkeeper . In the evenings he sang in the local bars. At first he called himself El niño de Marchena (The boy from Marchena). After winning an amateur competition in Fuentes de Andalucía, he finally got a contract in a café in Seville. Outside the province of Seville, he first made his debut in Córdoba and was recommended to Madrid in 1921 by the singer Rafael Pareja .

Here he recorded his first record and performed with well-known flamenco artists. He played in films and sang in so-called flamenco operas, some of which he wrote and directed himself.

Tours have taken him all over Spain , North Africa , the Middle East and Paris . In 1952 he began to give lectures on flamenco, and in 1954 he presented all styles of flamenco singing on a radio broadcast. Over the decades he has been honored with numerous prizes and has appeared on stage with all the greats of flamenco of his time. In 1974 he celebrated his 50th anniversary on stage. He soon developed cancer. On November 28, 1976, six days before his death, he publicly took leave of his audience and all other flamenco artists.

Pepe Marchena created his own school of flamenco, marchenismo .
