Per Daniel Amadeus Atterbom ( pronunciation : [ ˌpæːɹ ˌdɑːniəl amaˌdeːɵs ˈatːəɹbʊm ], born January 19, 1790 in Åsbo parish ; † July 21, 1855 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish poet and literary historian.

Life

Atterbom attended Linköping High School and in 1805 moved to Uppsala University . Together with several friends he founded the Aurorabund here in 1807 , a poetic-critical society whose main purpose was to free national literature from the bonds of French classicism and academic rigidity and to give it a national boost. Their organ was the magazine Phosphorus (1810-15), from which the followers of the new literary direction received the name " Phosphorists ".

Atterbom's geniuses and prosaic essays played a major role for the purpose of the paper, but also contributed to the fact that the bitterness of the academics was mainly directed against him. From 1812 to 1822 Atterbom published the Poetisk calendar . He traveled to Germany and Italy from 1817 to 1819, after his return he became the teacher of Crown Prince Oskar in German language and literature, then in 1821 a lecturer in history at the University of Uppsala and in 1828 received the professorship of philosophy there, which he became professor of aesthetics in 1835 swapped. In 1837 and 146/47 he was the rector of the university.

When he was accepted into the Swedish Academy in 1839, the old dispute between the Phosphorists and the Academy was completely settled. Atterbom died in Uppsala on July 21, 1855 .

On the 100th anniversary of his death, the Swedish Post issued a 20-öre and a 140-öre postage stamp with his likeness in 1955.

Atterbom was an important, preferably lyrical, poetic talent who was only severely impaired by the influence of Schelling's philosophy and a certain hyper-romanticism, as shown in the much-admired cycle of novels The Flowers ("Blommorna"). Where he appears unaffected and true to nature, as in many of his smaller poems, e.g. For example, in the lyrical Idyll Meine Wünsche (“Mina önskningar”) addressed to his mother and the cycle Minnesänger in Sweden (“Minnesangarne i Sverige”), his talent appears extremely amiable . His main works are the dramatized fairy tales:

  • The island of happiness ("Lycksalighetens Ö", Upsala. 1824-27, 2 vol .; German from Neus, Leipzig 1831-1833, 2 vol.) And
  • Vogel Blau (“Fogel Bla”), of which the latter only exist in fragments.

From a dramatic point of view, they are unsatisfactory, but contain numerous lyrical effusions of the greatest poetic beauty. Atterbom earned great merit through his literary and historical descriptions of

  • Sweden's seers and poets ("Sveriges siare och Skalder", Uppsala 1841–49, 5 vols.) And the spiritual work
  • Poesiens historia (Örebro 1861–62, 4 vols.). His too
  • Hiking memories ("Vandringsminnen"), in which he reproduces his impressions of the journey, contain a lot of excellent things. A complete edition of his works * Samlade dikter , 6 vol .;
  • Samlade skrifter i obunden style (Örebro 1854–70, 7 vols.).
