Perception is the third studio album by the US rapper NF (Nathan John Feuerstein). It was released on October 6, 2017 via Capitol Records and the NF Real Music label, which Feuerstein founded himself , and was produced by Tommee Profitt and David Garcia . Perception was NF's first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 charts.

history

On August 2, 2017, Outro, the first single from the previously announced but not yet named album, was released. Three days before the album was released, the single Let You Down was released, which was the first NF single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 charts and reached first place in the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 on March 10, 2018 in the USA . On October 6, 2017, the album Perception was finally released.

In the first week after its release, 55,000 units of the album were sold. Perception rose to number one on the Billboard 200 charts on October 23, 2017 , so Perception was both the first album in the top 10 of the charts and the first number one album for NF itself. It was also only the second album in 2017, which immediately started at number one on the Billboard 200 chart without previously being listed on the Hot 100. In the second week of the chart, Perception fell to 25th place. On March 22, 2018, the album received a gold record for 500,000 units sold. The platinum record for one million records sold followed on January 11, 2019.

The single Let You Down also climbed into the German single charts , reached 9th place as top position and was represented in the charts for a total of 25 weeks.

reception

The reviews of Perception were mixed to positive after publication. Matt Conner from CCM Magazine gave the album four out of five possible stars in his review and justified this, among other things, with the clearly recognizable maturation process compared to NF's earlier albums, without the flint stone losing its "dynamism and authenticity". At Allmusic , Perception received three and a half stars out of five. David Craft of Jesus Freak Hideout only gave the album two out of five possible stars shortly after its release, citing the album's lack of originality and the redundancy to other rap albums from 2017.

“Perception essentially consists of NF spending an hour yelling at listeners about his thinly-veiled insecurities while simultaneously bragging about how great he is. There are a few glimmers of quality scattered throughout the album, but it grows increasingly hard to look over its continued inadequacies. "

“Perception largely consists of NF spending an hour shouting at the audience his barely-veiled insecurities while also bragging about how great he is. There are also some bright spots scattered throughout the album, but it will still be very difficult to look over the continuing shortcomings. "

- David Craft : Jesus Freak Hideout

In a second review on Jesus Freak Hideout, Perception by Kevin Hoskins received three and a half stars out of five, and the user rating is four out of five possible stars. Leah-Lou Blank from Laut.de described the tracks on Perception as a mixture of "2000s Pop and the aggressive old Eminem". Although the album was sneaky at times, NF shines “lyrically, technically and stylistically”.
