Pereskia grandifolia is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet grandifolia means 'large-leaved'. Portuguese common names are "Guamacho Morado", "Ora Pro Nobis", "Quiabento" and "Sabonete".
description
Pereskia grandifolia grows shrubby or tree-shaped with upright or overhanging branches and reaches heights of 2 to 5 meters. Grayish-brown, rough trunks with a diameter of up to 20 centimeters are formed. The elliptical to obovate or lanceolate leaves are petiolate and of different sizes. The leaf blade is 9 to 23 inches long, 4 to 6 inches wide and 0.5 to 1.2 inches thick. The leaflet- shaped leaf veins have 7 to 13 side branches. The middle rib protrudes from the underside. Up to 8 thorns arise on thin branches from an areole , which can also be missing. They stand in bundles or are spread out. On older branches and on the trunk there may be 25 to 90 thorns per areole, which can be 2 to 6.5 centimeters long.
The pink, light pink or more or less purple flowers are in terminal or lateral inflorescences of 10 to 15 (rarely up to 30) individual flowers. Your flower stalk is up to 3 inches long. They reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. The flower base is top-shaped and has edges or furrows and raised bumps. The pear-shaped to top-shaped fruits are usually grouped together. They are 5 to 10 centimeters long and 3 to 7 centimeters in diameter. When ripe they are green to yellow.
