The peridiscaceae are a small plant family within the order of the saxifrage-like (Saxifragales). The four genera with about ten species occur in tropical South America and Africa.

description

They are deciduous trees . The alternate, stalked leaves are large, simple and leathery, with a smooth leaf margin. The stipules are present.

They have racemose or clustered inflorescences . The small flowers are hermaphroditic and radial symmetry . There are four to seven sepal-like , free bracts , which are mostly hairy. The many (30 to 100) free, fertile stamens are formed centrifugally. Three or four carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown short with three or four, more or less free pencils and as many scars. There are drupes formed.

Systematics

The Peridiscaceae family was established in 1950 by João Geraldo Kuhlmann in Arquivos do Servico Florestal , 3, p. 4. Taxa of this family were previously in the families of the Flacourtiaceae, Passifloraceae , Medusandraceae Brenan nom. cons. or Soyauxiaceae FABarkley nom. nud. or the order Violales.

The Peridiscaceae family includes:

According to Soltis et al. 2007 as shown in the evolution tree below. This also coincides with the work of Wurdack & Davis in 2009, except for the position of Whittonia , whose DNA sequences are so far unknown. Peridiscus and Whittonia are undoubtedly sister taxa due to their morphological characteristics .
