Pericles Simon

Perikles Wolfgang David Wilhelm Simon (born January 11, 1973 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German sports physician and occupational physiologist .

Simon received his doctorate in human medicine from the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen in 2000 and in behavioral and neurobiology in 2004 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and in Tübingen . He then worked in outpatient care, diagnostics and sports medical advice in the sports medicine department in Tübingen. In 2008 he was appointed professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he has headed the department for sports medicine since 2009. The focus of his research activities are the genetic requirements and molecular mechanisms of physical performance and their trainability.

From 2009 to 2013 Simon was a member of the Gene Doping Pannel of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). As a researcher and expert on doping, he was widely represented in the media. Since 2017, Simon has increasingly withdrawn from doping reporting. Most recently, together with an international research group, he succeeded in determining a shockingly high number of unreported cases for doping in top international sport of over 40%. The publication of this work in particular was blocked for years by organized sport and eventually became the subject of a hearing in the British Parliament. In view of the considerable structural deficits in the anti-doping fight, Simon is increasingly devoting himself to socially relevant topics in cancer early detection and internet-based sports therapy.
