Periklymenos ( ancient Greek Περικλύμενος , Latin Periclymenus ) is a figure in Greek mythology , son of Poseidon and Chloris , daughter of Teiresias . Periklymenus is a Theban hero who takes part in the defensive battle against the seven Argive attackers of the city in Seven Against Thebes . During the attack of the seven, Periklymenus smashed the Parthenopaios with a heavy piece of the parapet of the Theban city wall, which he threw down at the attacker. When he meets his lover Ismene , she is secretly pursued by the enemy general Tydeus , who kills Ismene while Periklymenus is able to flee. After the attack failed, Periclymenus was one of the Thebans who pursued the defeated Argives. Among other things, he chases after the seer Amphiaraos and pursues him in his chariot to the Ismenos River . When Periklymenus has almost reached the amphiaraoh and wants to ram his javelin between his shoulders, Zeus , who does not want to see his seer die in such an inglorious way , opens the earth with the help of a lightning strike , which devours the amphiaraos with his chariot and the driver.
