Heinrich Lewy

Heinrich Lewy (born September 29, 1863 in Breslau ; died after 1928) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher .

Life

Heinrich Lewy was the son of the Jewish businessman Meyer Lewy (died 1900) and Bertha geb. Miro, a daughter of the reform rabbi Heinrich Miro (1789-1854) from Breslau. From 1870 to 1881 he attended the St. Elisabeth high school in Breslau. He then studied Classical Philology at the Universities of Breslau and Berlin . On January 22, 1885, he was in Breslau in August Rossbach Dr. phil. PhD . On May 27, 1887 he passed the state examination for higher education and received full teaching authorization in the subjects Latin, Greek, Hebrew and philosophical propaedeutics , as well as in history up to secondary school.

After the probationary year at St. Elisabeth High School in Breslau (1887/88) he went to September 1889 as an assistant teacher at the Mulhouse high school in Alsace-Lorraine . On July 17, 1893 he was given a permanent position as a senior teacher; later the Prussian Ministry of Education awarded him the title of professor and the rank of councilor fourth class. In the autumn of 1917 Lewy moved to the Lyceum in Strasbourg in Alsace. From there he was expelled like all German nationals after the end of the First World War . He left Strasbourg on February 1, 1919 and fought for a number of years for his position in the Prussian school service. On October 1, 1921, he was employed as a teacher at the Leibniz-Gymnasium on Mariannenplatz in Berlin (today: Nürtingen-Grundschule ), where he worked until his retirement (October 1, 1928).

Lewy devoted himself to scientific studies throughout his career. From his early research focus on ancient Greek law, he gradually switched to comparative linguistics and cultural studies. He examined in particular the influence of Semitic languages ​​on Greek and dealt with oriental syncretistic religions. He published his studies as supplements to the school program and as essays in scientific journals ( Glotta , Philologus ). He also wrote numerous articles for Wilhelm Heinrich Roscher's Detailed Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology .
