Bad Schandau passenger elevator

The Bad Schandau passenger elevator is a passenger elevator built in Bad Schandau in 1904 , which leads from Bad Schandau to the Ostrauer Scheibe , a flat area around the Ostrau district . Use is chargeable. The passenger elevator is very similar to the Hammetschwand lift in Switzerland, which was built between 1903 and 1905 , but has a lower overall height.
Technology and history
The local hotelier Rudolf Sendig suggested the construction and financed it from his personal fortune. The elevator was manufactured by August Kühnscherf & Söhne and was inaugurated on Holy Saturday in 1905. He goes up in a 52.26 meter high, Art Nouveau designed steel lattice tower manufactured by the company Kelle & Hildebrandt in Großluga , which has a diameter of 5.20 meters at the bottom and 2.50 meters at the height of the exit Has. He overcomes a difference in altitude of 47.76 meters. There is a 1.25 meter wide viewing platform at the top exit . This is connected to the top of the rock face by a 27.80 meter long bridge .
The elevator was driven by electric current from the beginning until 1921 with direct current . This was taken from the overhead contact line of the electric Kirnitzschtalbahn during the summer months ; in winter and in emergencies, it was supplied by an accumulator that was previously fed from the local network.
During the First World War , the plant was stopped. In 1921 the drive of the passenger elevator was switched to three-phase current , a hand crank remained for emergency operation. In 1950 a traction sheave hoist was installed. In 1954 the facility was placed under a preservation order. In 1961 two additional guy ropes were installed and in 1978 a new control system was installed. The facility was renovated in 1989/1990.
The elevator in the film
The elevator was the location of several scenes in Wes Anderson's 2013 film Grand Budapest Hotel .
