The Church of Peter and Paul is located at an altitude of about 1200 m in Oberwöllan on the southern slope of the Wöllaner Nock in the municipality of Arriach . It is a branch church of Afritz .

history

The church was built in the 14th century and first mentioned in 1615 as a branch church of Treffen .

Building

The former fortified church is a small Gothic building with a Romanesque core. A drawn-in, low choir adjoins the nave. A sacristy is built to the north of the choir . The four-story north tower at the east end of the nave with biforic sound windows and loopholes is crowned with a pointed gable helmet.

The bell was cast by Lorenz Petz in 1678.

In 1993, a St. Christopher fresco from 1439, a gothic holiday Christ and two sundials were uncovered on the south wall .

On the south side of the nave and in the choir there are pointed arch windows, in the west facade a Gothic profiled pointed arch portal and in the south wall a small Gothic portal with shoulder arches. In the church wall there is a Roman tombstone for the local couple Piletus and Severa.

A flat stenciled coffered ceiling from 1530, which was restored in 1864, extends over the nave . The wooden organ gallery has a parapet with carved and painted ornamental fields from the first half of the 16th century. A Gothic portal with a shoulder arch in the north wall of the nave leads into the tower. A pointed arched triumphal arch connects the nave with the single-bay choir with ⅝-end and stitch cap vault. A pointed arch portal leads into the groin vaulted sacristy. In the choir, frescos by an unknown master from 1494 have been preserved. The Last Judgment is depicted on the south wall and a largely destroyed Mount of Olives scene on the opposite side.

Facility

The high altar with twisted columns and acanthus decorations dates from 1706. The altar panel shows the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul and is flanked by the statues of Saints Ulrich and Rupert . The coronation of Mary is shown in the top picture.

On the right is the early baroque St. Mary's altar with columns from 1661. The main picture shows a crescent moon Madonna with child, the top picture again shows a coronation of the Virgin Mary. A Roman tombstone for the local couple Calendinus and Secunda has been incorporated into the cafeteria.

The most valuable object in the church is a late Gothic winged altar from 1519. On the left of the church there is the altar table with a predella , on which the veil of Veronica and angels are depicted. The rest of the altar is on permanent loan in the Diocesan Museum in Klagenfurt .

The pulpit with painted evangelists and a hand with a crucifix dates from the beginning of the 18th century.

The prayer stalls from the 16th century with the aisle-side folding armchairs are unique in Carinthia.
